Dropped AirPods in Water? Here’s What You Should Do

AirPods are one of the leading earbuds that are currently available on the market. Many people decide to get AirPods, even though they aren’t the cheapest option out there, because AirPods offer outstanding quality and are much more durable than your regular earbuds. So, what happens if you get water in your AirPods? If you’ve spent a good amount of cash on getting your AirPods, this isn’t a situation that you’ll experience lightly. Is there anything you can do that will save you from a hefty bill of getting new AirPods?  Even though AirPods are resistant to sweat and water, they still aren’t waterproof. This means that if your AirPods are in light contact with water, they won’t get damaged. However, if they’re submerged in water, they won’t be able to survive. If you’ve dropped AirPods in water, you’re in luck, because in today’s guide we’ll go over the ways you can save your AirPods from water damage!

Does The Warranty Cover Dropped AirPods in Water?

When you get water into your AirPods, the warranty is surely one of the first things you’ll think of. All of the accessories you buy from Apple have a warranty that starts on the day you purchase the item and lasts for 1 year. However, damage resulting from unauthorized modifications or accidents isn’t covered by the warranty. If the case is that you’ve accidentally washed your AirPods Pro with the laundry, or you dropped them into water, Apple isn’t going to be able to replace or fix them. So, at this point, the fixing is up to you.  Now, let’s go over some ways to fix your AirPods.

Dry Your AirPods

Drying your Apple AirPods is the first step you should take after you’ve dropped them in water. If you’ve ever dropped a phone in water, your initial thought will be to dry your AirPods out by using rice. However, you need to keep in mind that AirPods can get the small rice grains stuck in them, and cause an even bigger problem. For this reason, you should avoid using rice. Instead, get a dry and lint-free microfiber cloth and completely wipe the AirPods. Make sure that you also go over the charging case, as well. Use the cloth to put both the charging case and the AirPods upside down. Leave the charging case open and place it on the cloth with the AirPods placed face down. Your AirPods should be dry in a couple of hours, but before you try them out, we suggest that you wait for at least 4 hours. If your AirPods were underwater for longer than a few seconds, we recommend that you leave them on the cloth even longer.  Another great tip is to put a packet of bamboo charcoal beside your AirPods while they’re drying. These packets absorb moisture, and this can help your AirPods dry quicker and more thoroughly.

Use Water Eject

You can also try to eject the water out of your AirPods. If you’re successful, you shouldn’t have any issues with your earbuds moving forward. That said, timing has a lot to do with whether or not you’ll succeed at ejecting the water out of the AirPods. If you want to use this method to bring your AirPods back to life, you need to do this immediately after you’ve dropped AirPods in water. The first thing you need to do is connect your AirPods to your iPhone and make sure that the volume is turned up to the maximum. Then, use your iPhone to use the shortcut with the Siri Shortcuts app. Next, locate the app and click on it.  Water will start coming out of your AirPods, so make sure that you get a dry and clean cloth to dry your AirPods. Repeat this step as many times as you need, until there isn’t any water coming out of the AirPods. Lastly, connect the AirPods and see if they work.

Replace Your AirPods

If you’ve gone through the solutions we’ve offered and your AirPods still aren’t working, chances are you’ll probably need to replace your earbuds. Luckily, if only one of your AirPods isn’t working, it will only cost $69 to buy another one.  If both of the earbuds aren’t working, you’ll still be able to save money when you buy both of them separately, since that will cost less than a complete set with another case. Like we previously mentioned, even if your product is under warranty, Apple won’t be able to replace them, since the product isn’t waterproof.

How to Avoid Water Damage

Instead of repairing the damage once it’s happened, make sure that you take preventative measures to avoid dropped AirPods in water. Here are a few steps you can take:

  • Keep drinks away from your AirPods.
  • Put your AirPods in a safe space if it starts raining.
  • If a surface is wet, make sure that you don’t leave your AirPods there.
  • If you aren’t using your AirPods, keep them in the case for safekeeping.
  • Before you put your clothes in the washing machine, check your pockets to see if you’ve forgotten your AirPods.
  • Avoid contact with sun lotion, perfume, makeup, or any other liquid substances that may get in your AirPods.

Final Thoughts

As the saying goes, prevention is better than the cure! Do whatever you can to avoid exposing your AirPods to water, but if you’ve already dropped AirPods in water, make sure that you react as fast as you can. If you go for using Water Eject to push water out of your AirPods, make sure that you allow them to dry for an hour or two before using them. We hope our guide has been helpful!
