I heart Every Night Drive. If you are an angst ridden teen you probably will too. But the five young men from Staten Island’s fan base isn’t limited to local teens. In fact, the well crafted screamo songs, such as “Pull Down Your V-Neck, It’s Time To Get Physical” could be indulged in by any enthusiast of bands like Under Oath, all the way to the minions courting From First To Last. (Never mind the obvious discrepancy over belief systems.)
While currently looking for a producer for their next album, the guys are enjoying the part of being a band they like best: Never walking through the motions, leaving it all on the stage; whether that stage is a metal show, a festival, or a back yard party.
Every Night Drive is my commute from work to home. What does it mean for the band?
When we first started the band, we were just jamming. Half our members were from one band the other half, another. After playing and writing some songs each and every day for a few weeks, Nick and Manny were sitting at a light, thinking of band names. Talking about what we all have or had in common at the time. The studio we practice is at LEAST 35 or 40 minutes away from any one of our homes, and the long drive home, every night, kinda just sounded good. At the next red light we asked our bandmates in the car next to us, and they were stoked.
There are many elements infused the Everynightdrive sound, such as, Screamo, Pop-Punk, even Electronica. Who or what are you major influences musically?
We LIKE a lot of today’s music; band’s that we could fit on a bill with, or people say that we “sound like.” But, in actuality, the people who write the bulk of the songs are really all influenced by older music, bands that are nothing like us. Bands like the Deftones, Queen, Goo Goo Dolls, Beach Boys, The Cure, Sting, those are all music acts that everynightdrive grew up on and has touched our lives to make music for tomorrow.
You guys hail from Staten Island. Do you think that being so close to the The Capital of the World has had positive effects for the band?
It does, and does not. People tell us, “Oh you guys are from New York City”! But, we live on Staten Island…a place known for it’s world renowned waste dumps. It’s an awesome place, in some respects, we call it home. Going in and playing in the City is always exciting for us. Our location is also pretty convenient if we book a show in NYC, Brooklyn, Jersey, Philly, or any other nearby parts of the tri-state area.
What part of being a band do you like better, the creative process (writing, recording, etc…) or playing live for an audience?
We all enjoy every aspect of being in a band, minus the part where we have no money lol. Writing and recording and buying merch can sometimes feel like work, but it Is always something that you learn from, and we always try and have fun while doing it. But, playing shows is what it’s all about. Having people give a crap about what you are doing, and just playing as loud and tight and intense as possible, to the point where someone has to feel something. And you know it, when they do. Those 30, 45, however many minutes on stage. You forget how much gas is in your tank. You forget what drama is going on with your family. Your girl troubles don’t mean a thing. Playing for those people, is all that matters.
I was unable to locate a discography for your band. Do you have any previous albums or EP’s or are you currently working on your debut?
We have our first 3-Song Demo we recorded with Jeff Berner of Galuminum Foils Productions, in Brooklyn, NY, starting December, 2007. We also just took a ten and a half hour drive, and lived in Dublin, Ohio with Tim Kennon to track our Five Song, Debut EP, “Sunny Asylum,” back in March of this year. We are currently writing new songs, and looking for a new studio, and the right producer to track our next project.
I read the following on your MySpace profile:
“Everynightdrive may be the only screamo/pop-punk band to play The Hilton Garden Inn”
What was that experience like?
It was different. A Friend of ours asked us to play his sister’s backyard party. It was free food, hanging out with friends, and a party, why say no?! At that party, ANOTHER girl asked us to take part in HER party…so months later her mother booked us as a surprise to play her big party, at the Hilton. It was different, we were loading in our gear in our jeans and button ups while the place was flooded with suits and dresses and tuxes. The room was big and all the rooms were blasting music, so I doubt other rooms heard our songs, but some of the family members and older folks were a little shocked at first. By the end everyone was talking to us, all ages, telling us how good we are and how happy we made the girl. We aren’t a sweet 16 band. It may not be our thing, but we did something good that night and made someone who cares about us smile, so it’s really all that matters.
If you had the opportunity to play with any band, past or present, who would it be and why?
I think we could all put together a monster showcase, or tour for our band to be a part of. Not ONE band to name, because we all have such vast taste in music that varies, from old to new. If we could open for any group of bands it would probably be somewhere along the lines of Deftones, underOATH, AFI, Madina Lake and As Cities Burn. Just to have a blast.
Finally, any shameless plugs that you would like to tell us about?
Check out the songs on www.myspace.com/ihearteverynightdrive Follow the END Twitter www.twitter.com/everynightdrive . Talk to us! IF you book shows…send us an Email. If you play in a band, we wanna hear it. We want to just get out there, play for every pair of ears that can possibly or physically listen. We aren’t really good at anything, but everynightdrive is something that we love, and strive to be our best at. Check us out, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Thanks!
