It’s obvious that in 2009 Boys Like Girls have a lot to live up to. After a very impressive breakout self-titled debut they became one of the hottest pop-punk bands in the mainstream scene, this was back in 2006. Now ready to go with their sophomore attempt Love Drunk, Boys Like Girls are out to prove that another album from them is worth a three year wait. Unfortunately for them it could go either way because very few things that fall below amazing are worth three times in the scene. So the question remains does Love Drunk live up to the hype?
Overall Love Drunk is a pretty good pop-punk (more on the pop side) effort. It is filled with catchy riffs and hooks that make for some pretty fun songs. But for the most part it gets a little slow and isn’t able to match up with the raw energy of their debut album. Certainly songs like the well-chosen first single “Love Drunk” and a positive crowd pleaser “Contagious” showcase where Boys Like Girls do their sound right in moving fast and bursting at the seams with energy.
The album really suffers when they decide to slow things down, turning them more into a pop cliche amongst generic lyrics and rhythms. Songs like “The First One” and “Two Is Better Then One” are alright, but they aren’t up to snuff with what Boys Like Girls could be doing with their sophomore effort.
It is becoming more and more obvious that Boys Like Girls are more content with being an arena headliner then a club favorite as their sound becomes more and more pop oriented. While some songs still capture their previous charm “Chemicals Collide”, while others scream top 40 radio hits (“She’s Got A Boyfriend Now”). The end result is underwhelming, but some strong songs still show off that Boys Like Girls have some talent hidden up their sleeves, now let’s hope for a magic trick with their next album.
